Replacing windows is an exciting time. You're bound to see not only an updated and freshened look to your whole home but also lower utility bills and improve your home's value.
Before the new windows arrive, though, you should take care of a few tasks to prepare. What are they? Here are five things to do while getting ready.
Before making any changes to prepare for the window replacements themselves, consult with the contractor doing the work. This way, you will know exactly what they will need access to and you'll get an idea what will occur on the big day (or days).
The contractor may want to do some of the preparation work themselves for liability purposes, so come up with a clear list of anything they want you to leave alone.
Window technicians will need full access to all the relevant windows. Start by taking down any window coverings. This is a great opportunity to clean and prepare draperies and curtains to match the just new look of your new windows. You'll also want to remove shutters - particular interior ones - as well as blinds and the hardware related to them.
Remember, the more prepared you are, the faster and simpler the process will go.
Ensure easy and clear access to all the windows - both on the interior and exterior sides.
Check what's going on outside each window being replaced, and assess how easy it is to get to and work near the spot. You may need to trim back bushes or trees to clear both ground space and make sure nothing gets in the way from above. During the rainy season, you may want to place additional boards or coverings to make things safer.
Likewise, move furniture and belongings around the inside of windows so that workers can move large panes into and around rooms without tripping on anything or bumping into your belongings. Walk the paths yourself to see if they're as clear and easy as they can be.
Just as with any construction being done in your home, you'll want to protect things from the mess and work. While most window contractors will also take measures to protect your home, you should remove items that are of particular value or are irreplaceable in the family. This may include artwork on nearby walls, antiques, collectibles on nearby shelves, and family photos on the walls.
Check your insurance as well. Make sure that you have appropriate homeowners insurance to cover anything that may go wrong when the work is being done. And if the windows significantly increase the value of your home, you should check the policy before having them installed on-site.
Everyone is busy, but you'll need to make sure that a responsible person is home during the window installation. Check with your contractor to see if this person must be a home owner of if it can simply be an adult member of the family who knows what's being done.
Whoever is assigned to be around when the windows are being installed should know which windows are being replaced, what measures have been taken to provide good access, and how payment has been arranged. If you have any particular restrictions for workers or vehicles in your community, inform them in advance.
