Siding – FAQ

What are the benefits and drawbacks of vinyl siding?
Today's products offer a variety of trim and accent options, more styles and finishes and a full spectrum of colors from earth tones to rich tones like red, dark green and deep blues. Vinyl is also very affordable, as it offers the lowest total installed cost. If installed correctly, it is low maintenance, easy to install and easy to replace in sections. And it is a "green" product. Some drawbacks are that it does not last as long as brick, pieces may need to be replaced over time due to extraneous circumstances and it may need to be power-washed a couple of times per year.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of aluminum and steel siding?
Aluminum and steel siding are rot-proof, waterproof, fireproof, corrosion-resistant, impervious to termites and able to withstand years of exposure to the elements, and will last virtually indefinitely if simply left alone. Regardless of the home's architecture, they are available in a variety of styles, colors and accessories to suit every taste out there. The drawbacks are that they can be more expensive than vinyl, especially aluminum, and they are not as easy to install or replace in sections. Dents and scratches are easily noticeable.
What is composite siding?
The most modern option on the market today, composite siding is engineered to look like wood siding. It gives homes a look of rich detail and deep textures. It is different from real wood in that homeowners don't have to worry about constant upkeep and painting and it is safe against moisture and insects. However, the product selection is minimal and it is initially higher to install than vinyl.
